Critical Roles for Teachers
"Critical Pedagogy is a way of teaching and learning that poses problems about the world with the goal of helping , all participants become more fully human and transform the reality around them" (Hones 1999)
As teachers of EL Learners our goal is to have the best interest of the student in our approach to instruction and or tutorials as we progress in the teaching of English to learners with diverse lives . The text stresses the teacher's role in drawing upon the student's experience, culture and personal strength . As we get to know the student we can better teach the student by understanding their lives and culture and can their fore use the student's prior knowledge to connect to the teaching of English in a way that is of interest to the student's life and experience.
We as educators are obligated to provide our students with more that the academic standards required by the State. Our students cannot be expected to succeed educationally if they do not have the tools to be successful citizens of this world. Todays students are in great need of guidance, it is up to us to provide what they are lacking.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the more we get to know our students the easier it is to meet their needs. I teach a SH K-6th special education class and my students stay in my class for years. The one thing I love is that I get to know my students and their families. It helps knowing their culture and experiences to teach them. I think we do need to provide are students with so much more then just teaching standards.
